Polymethacrylate (PMA)

Polymethacrylate (PMA)

Polymethacrylates are synthetic polymers derived from methacrylate esters, commonly used as viscosity index (VI) improvers, pour point depressants, and defoamers in lubricating oils.

Key functions of PMA

Viscosity index improver: PMAs help oils resist thinning at high temperatures and thickening at low temperatures, improving performance across a wide temperature range.

Pour point depressant (PPD): modified PMA structures disrupt wax crystal formation in oils, lowering the pour point and improving cold flow properties.

Shear stability enhancer: PMAs can be used for high shear stability, making them suitable for applications like automatic transmission fluids and hydraulic oils.

Defoaming agent: PMAs are used to reduce foam formation in oil systems, especially where high agitation is involved.

Key Advantages of PMA viscosity modifiers:

  • Highly customizable (molecular weight, polarity, solubility)
  • Excellent clarity in finished oils
  • Strong low-temperature performance
  • Good oxidative and thermal stability
  • Compatible with Group I–IV base oils
