Produced by hydro-treating sweet crude distillates at pressures over 2500 psi, naphthenic base oils feature a low pour point, excellent liquidity, low wax content, and low aromatic content. Both oil types come from crude oil, but the naphthenic base oils are from crude with high naphthenic hydrocarbons content and paraffinic base oils are from crude oil with high paraffinic hydrocarbons content.
Paraffinic oils are extensively refined and generally contain a high level of wax, have higher viscosity index, higher pour point, are more stable at higher temperatures, the linear hydrocarbons in paraffinic oils are more resistant to thermal degradation, which makes them well-suited for high-performance uses.
Naphthenic oils are also refined but have a lower wax content, lower viscosity index and lower pour point. However, naphthenic oils typically offer superior performance in very low temperatures due to their enhanced fluidity in cold conditions. Naphthenic cyclic hydrocarbons contribute to the oil’s solvency, making them a great choice for applications that demand high additive solubility.
Naphthenic base oils do not neatly fit into the standard API Group classifications (Groups I-V) used for paraffinic base oils. API stands for American Petroleum Institute. They are typically derived from crude oil refining processes that yield a significant amount of cycloalkanes. Properties like low pour point and solvency characteristics make them distinct, leading to separate industry specifications and applications beyond the typical API Group framework.
Naphthenic oil originates from the refining of naphthenic crude oil.
Naphthenic crude oil itself is extracted from bedrock and then undergo distillation and treatment processes to isolate and refine the naphthenic fraction into naphthenic base oils for applications such as dewaxing and sulfur removal.
